You ran Roxette, owned by Shelbie Ruel for the majority of this year. How did this match up come to be?
2025 CFR went so well I went into it sitting 9th in the standings and ended up placing third overall qualifying me for Calgary.
When I got the Calgary invitation I made a post and a joke saying it worked so well in 2025 if anyone had a horse for me to borrow, then Shelbie reached out!
When and how did you know that Roxette would have what it takes to carry you through the season?
The first race I went to on Roxette was Yellow Rose and Royal Crown after only 3 days of riding her before hand. She made 5 of the exact same runs in the same arena, so I knew the consistency and heart was there. I watched her runs with Shelbie, and she looked great in open arenas and shallow ground, so I knew right away! She’s truly talented and the same in any set up.
Tell us about Marci Layes Rabbit, and how that match up came to be as well?
Rabbit is a true rodeo horse, she thrives off of the crowd, and absolutely loves her job. Marci did an amazing job training her. All I had to do was jump on and jockey such a freak of nature on the pattern!
I reached out to Marci in 2025 about running Rabbit at Calgary once I qualified and Febe got hurt. During Marci and I talking about the idea of Rabbit, Makayla Lundy’s stallion Fernando came out of nowhere, and ran so well the first round in Ponoka, the timing never worked out that year for Marci and I.
Then the spring of 2026 during Yellow Rose, Marci and I talked again and she mentioned the idea of Rabbit for Calgary. Once the timing worked on both sides, Marci let me swing a leg over Rabbit for the first time this year before the Ponoka Stampede 12 man round!
What was your most memorable run of the season, and what made it stand out?
Grande Prairie, Roxette’s first rodeo win, and my hometown where I grew up. Every year I’ve rodeoed, I have never come close to placing in Grande Prairie. After the first year of not placing, I made it a goal and somehow vendetta to at least place there. Now 4 years later Roxette, comes out of nowhere and into my life. I had no idea what to expect going into our run, as the ground is tough for experienced horses, so I had no expectations. That’s when a big goal of mine finally happened and it couldn’t have been better!
Looking back at your season as a whole, what are you most proud of?
How consistent this year was! Roxette grabbed a check at almost every rodeo. We have only knocked three barrels together so far! I’ve never even tried to count or think on those types of things with my other horses, in fear of the answer.
How have you changed as a competitor since your first CFR?
To really focus on taking one round at a time.
What keeps you hungry after you've already accomplished what so many people dream of?
The progress, one year later looking back on a run I really realize how much showing up for your goals in the small things every day advance me, adapt me, and shape me into the competitor I’ve become, and am still growing into! Ups and downs are apart of everyone’s progress and process, so why not enjoy the whole process?
What is something you're proud of that has nothing to do with your rodeo career?
My family. I grew up half my life with 4 other siblings in the house. We are all very close and grew up like 5 best friends. It’s a sad but happy time in life, with all of us growing up and doing our own things. I’m really proud of what all of them are accomplishing and pushing towards.
Do you have a pre-run routine that helps you get into the right mindset?
I’m pretty easy going. I can’t say I have a set routine before I run, but I do always take a deep breath right before I take off down the alley, and let muscle memory take over as much as I can.
When you look at a prospect, what catches your eye first?
The overall balance of how they look, how they handle and think through pressure. One that isn’t smart enough to try and out think me, but one smart enough to think for themselves.
What's the hardest part about chasing a dream that most people don't see?
Realizing in some situations it’s easier to see people where they are at on the topic, and leave it at that. I have learned to be confident in myself and what I’m doing, I don’t feel the need or want to explain
What is one thing that is mandatory in your horses post run care routine?
I make sure that my horses get electrolytes.
