What was your most memorable run of the season, and what made it stand out?
I think my most memorable run of the season would have to be the first round at Ponoka. Ponoka is always memorable because of the long score, but this year was even more memorable because I tied the arena record with a 2.3 to win the round, and its little extra special being the home town rodeo.
What did you learn at last year's CFR that you're bringing with you this year?
Something I learned at last year's CFR was that no matter what the outcome is, be proud of yourself and worry about the next calf, not the last one.
How do you separate one bad run from the next?
One way I try to separate one bad run from the next is by slowing things down on the dummy, going back to the basics and building my confidence back up in the practice, and going from there. It's always harder to remember the good runs and forget the bad ones. Don't dwell. Get ready for the next one.
What's the hardest part about chasing the CFR dream that most people don't see?
I think the hardest part about chasing the CFR dream would probably be all the driving. Grateful for all the places that host rodeos, and allow us all to come and do what we love, but we do put on a lot of miles.
Looking back at your season as a whole, what are you most proud of?
Looking back on the season, I would say I am most proud of not getting mad at myself after one bad run. I am also proud of taking my 6yr old along and placing at the rodeos on her.
Do you have a pre-run routine that helps you get into the right mindset?
My typical pre-run routine is usually roping the dummy before I hop on Piglet to get warmed up. I pick the rope that feels the best and hope it works.
What do you do to keep a sharp mental edge in the game of rodeo? How did you stay motivated throughout the season?
To keep a sharp mental edge and stay motivated I like to control the controllables There's not much you can control through rodeo, so I try to control what I can. For example my attitude, letting go of bad runs quickly so a single mistake does not derail your confidence, or ruin the next run . I also rely on the hours of practice and repetition put in at home so muscle memory takes over under pressure.
What's one part of your horse's care program you refuse to compromise on?
A good farrier, good feed program, and of course giving MissPiggy lots of treats.
What goes through your mind in the box before a run?
There are many different things running through my mind before I nod my head, but a few of the things are trying to make sure Miss Piggy is standing in the corner well, and has her head straight. Then I will wait and make sure the calf's head is straight, and when I think everything feels right, I nod my head.
Did you face any challenges this season? Tell us about them.
I was very fortunate this season that I didn't struggle as much as I did last year. One thing that always seems to challenge me is being confident in my swing, my throw and taking my first shot cause it might be my only one.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to chase the CFR dream?
Some advice I would have to give is something my dad always tells me which is, "score first, rope second".
Who has been in your corner the most this season, and what have they done to help you get here?
The people that have been in my corner the most would definitely be my family and close friends.
My Mom and Dad are always arranging plans to divide and conquer to ensure that Tryp and I make it to all our rodeos. I think my biggest cheerleaders are my Mom, Nana, Mimi, Auntie Oani, and Raven they are always cheering me on. My Dad and Bumpie are the best coaches a girl could ask for. I have a very big and loving family, I truly believe I wouldn't have gotten this far with out them. My Family finding the time to come and watch me. Tegan and Suttyn being the best practice buddies. Along with Lawrie and Bobbi for being awesome traveling partners. I really couldn't do it without everyones support.
I want to extend a massive thank you to the incredible sponsors who stand behind me and my horses on the rodeo trail. Having a dependable team makes all the difference, and I could not hit the road or compete at my best without their unwavering belief and support.
