Lynette Brodoway CFR 2025
The 2025 Canadian Finals Rodeo will mark Lynette Brodoway’s eighth qualification. Among this year’s competitors, she is one of only two women to reach that mark, a true veteran in a strong field we’ll see at Rogers Place this October.
The 2023 Canadian Champion entered 44 rodeos this year and won $29,678.15, which qualified her to the CFR in tenth position, aboard her twelve year old gelding, SR Boots on Fire (Root Beers Boots x Sun, Wind and Fire) aka Cowboy. She has qualified for the CFR on three Root Beers Boots horses over the years, proving herself as a great horse trainer, and rodeo athlete in Canada.
Lynette purchased Cowboy From Sandy Ridge Stallion Station (Doug and Carol Schafer) as a weanling. Doug deemed him as the right colt for her that year, and he was correct. At twelve years old, he will take Lynette down the alley once again.

As an eight-time qualifier, what is some advice you would pass on to any of the first time qualifiers, in any event?
The finals can be emotionally challenging, focus on your own game and do not get discouraged if things don't go your way.
What was your most memorable run this season, and what made it memorable?
Langley BC was my most memorable run this season as I needed a good run from Cowboy if we were to make it into the finals This year. Cowboy did not disappoint, a third place run clinched our eight qualification.
What was different about your rodeo season this year compared to last year?
Finding myself at the bottom of the standings and my horses not working in the middle of the summer was definitely a challenge and quite different from the last couple of years. Cowboy started this season out really strong but at Lea Park he did something in his run that did not feel right and from there our runs were not feeling like he normally does. He was struggling with some ground conditions and that is usually not his deal. I ended up having to give him about five weeks off right at the start of Calgary Stampede. In that time he received lots of rehab -chiro, ultrasound, massage and injections. It took an amazing team to help me figure out what was causing all the soreness. When that got resolved, Cowboy recovered quicker than we expected, getting us to another finals!
What was the best restaurant you stopped at all year? Any hidden gems to mention?
Ken and I both enjoy Greek food, there are a few we visit throughout the western provinces, but the one in Airdrie is probably our favorite.
What is your least favourite part of being on the rodeo road, and what is your favourite?
Cowboy doesn't enjoy travelling. If I put too many miles on him in a day, he stresses in the trailer. On long trips I have to map out my stops strategically making sure he isn't in the trailer too long.
Favorite part of rodeo - I enjoy the competition the best. The actual run! You work hard all week getting prepared and then the run itself will hopefully be your reward. Learning and growing from each race is what I enjoy the most.
Tell readers something good that happened this year.
Rodeo does present an opportunity for me to visit friends that I would not normally see and who provide Cowboy and I great places to stay. I look forward to those visits every year. They usually include good food and occasionally some shopping! Thanks to all of you who welcomed us back year after year.
What therapies are a must have for your horse?
Bemer, Stance Supplements, Longhorn Equine Therapy (Carlotta Weerstra) massages regularly, Synergy and Energy Equine - Dr Chad Hewlett and Dr. Travis Kelter.
How do you manage to balance life at home/work with life on the road
I am fortunate to have a very supportive family, they all pitch in when needed. Spending time with my grandkids when I am home during the week is the priority. On the long hauls, Ken helps me with the driving and everything else that comes with travelling.
How are you preparing for the Canadian Finals Rodeo practise wise? What is your routine like to be ready for Edmonton?
In preparation for the CFR I will go to a couple of indoor jackpots with Cowboy and Poncho. They will also get massages each week and some chiro. Their fitness is always the priority; having the finals a month earlier works well as they are still in good shape from the summer rodeos. All my horses start in our Wildfire Walker for 20 minutes at a long trot, then I put another 20 to 30 minutes loping on them which includes transitions, breezing, and hill work. I try to stay out of my arena as much as possible leading up to the finals as a mental break from competing.
How many barrel horses do you currently have in your string, tell us about them?
Poncho, JB Monkey Do is seven years old, he ran at all the winter rodeos and a few this summer. He will go with Cowboy to the finals as well. I have Tritan, Interes Fino, a six year old gelding that is all running bred. He has gone to some local jackpots this summer and is coming along nicely. Carat, SR Diamonds N Boots, is four years old and a half sister to Cowboy on the sire side. Her mom, Tainted Luv, is by Valiant Hero and is next year's futurity horse.
What is your advice for someone who wants to take a shot at making the Canadian Finals Rodeo?
Horsepower is obviously very important but you must also have a good mental game. Be committed to the process, be all in , do not get discouraged when things aren't going well and NEVER give up!
Cowboy has an amazing team and their dedication to his well being is what has gotten us to the Finals this and every other year. Dr Chad Hewlett , your knowledge and experience is very much appreciated! When everything was going south this summer, so to speak, Dr Chad and Dr Travis worked tirelessly on Cowboy to insure his well being.
Carlotta's devotion to Cowboy is unwavering and he would not be the horse he is without you!
Gail and Scott Sapergia and the COBIT. When I was certain that Cowboy was out for the remainder of the season, you turned it around.
Without this great team and their belief in Cowboy and I we would be on the outside looking in.
Many thanks to My family for encouraging me and standing by me this year when things were not going well. This is so important to me, thank you for your love, prayers and devotion.
All those who cheer us on and send all the encouraging messages... Thank you!
My sponsors who support and help me get down the road. None of this is possible without you. Second Chance Excavating, Ample AG Solutions, Stance EQ Supplements, New Way Kubota - Brooks, Martin Chysler in Brooks and Longhorn Equine Therapy (Carlotta Weerstra)
With each year I realize how very fortunate I am to be a part of this great sport called rodeo. The CPRA and all those involved in hosting professional rodeos deserved our utmost respect! I am so very grateful to be part of this great organization! Thank you for your dedication to rodeo!
