Deb Guelly CFR/WNFR 2015

Deb Guelly is a name every Canadian Barrel Racer knows, as she is a Northern Legend. The Okotoks Alberta resident has been to the Canadian Finals Rodeo 22 times since she became a card holder in 1991, and the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo six times! HOLY SMOKES!

In the 2015 season, Deb the horses travelled 140,000kms, and each kilometer was well worth it as she managed to qualify for the Canadian Finals Rodeo and the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo!  It took her  31 CPRA rodeos to end up 5th in Canada with $23,890.70, and 77 qualifying rodeos to slide into 15th position just in the nick of time with $59,769.17, securing her spot to the WNFR! In September alone, she brought home just over $17,000! Way to Hustle!!! Guelly is one of six Canadians headed to Las Vegas this year. The last time 6 cowboys & cowgirls qualified was in 2010, but only 5 competed as Rod Hay was injured at Innisfail. Before that, it was 2008.

This year Deb ran Royal Star Commander (AR Star going back to Shawne Bug X Go Royal Scarlett going back to Three Bars) “Commander” and Docs Flashy Scooter (out of her horse Buck’s full sister Mr Horton Leo bred and Docs Paradise) “Scooter”.

I asked Deb what kinds of quirks the two had. “Commander works or he doesn’t. Sometimes he gets scared and doesn’t always work. Scooter, he always gives you 110 percent but in everyday life he does whatever he wants to. Commander, he runs really fast and turns he stays upright, doesn’t always run straight lines he is a free roller. Scooter is also a free roller,  turns his barrels tight, the same run every time.”

What is your drive to stay on the rodeo trail year after year?
I truly love what I do and I love being on the road.

What was your favorite Canadian rodeo this year?
I would have to say Grande Prairie just because it has never been a rodeo that I have done really well at, so finally winning it is great.

What has been your favorite moment on the road this year?
At the end of the season when I made the WNFR again it took a while to sink in. I can’t wait to run down the alley in the Thomas and Mack, it makes everything we sacrifice worth it.

There is so many great friends and family that have helped out that is really appreciated and sponsors that are helping out Hinton Tire Service in Oregon, D Loewen Enterprise Rose Prairie BC, Fortress Farms Grande Prairie, & Equisure South Dakota.

I know that all of Canada will be cheering Deb on during the WNFR in Las Vegas, NV this December along with our other 5 qualifiers!
