What was your most memorable run of the season, and what made it stand out?
Winning Teepee Creek rodeo, as it was my first pro rodeo win of the season and it was a tour rodeo which really helps with points towards that finals.
Looking back at your season as a whole, what are you most proud of?
Persevering through the challenging weather and mud conditions. My mare proving to me that she could handle all situations thrown at her and just kept trying in every circumstance.
How have you changed as a competitor since your first CFR?
I feel like my mindset is a bit more grounded, and I have more confidence in what to expect from my horse, how to enter rodeos, and how to ride for certain set ups and ground conditions.
What's one quality your horse has that you wish you could bottle and put into every horse?
TRY!!! My mare has so much work ethic, and willingness to be a serious competitor. She gets very amped up and excited about running barrels, and she always tries to win.
What 3 traits do you look for when considering a prospect and why?
Bloodlines, all my horses have proven rodeo crosses. Conformation, straight legged, not too steep of a shoulder, long underline and nice hip. I also like a horse with a lot of flexibility through their body and light in the face. Temperament, I like a smart, sensitive horse that pays attention.
What's the hardest part about chasing the CFR dream that most people don't see?
I treat my rodeo season as a full time job, yet it doesn’t pay all of the bills even when winning, so I try to have prospects coming along to also put time into to sell.
Do you have a pre-run routine that helps you get into the right mindset?
I try to dedicate the hour before my run to focus on making sure my equipment, my horse and everything is ready to compete.
Do you have any rodeo superstitions?
Cowboy hats can’t go on the bed.
What's one part of your horse's care program you refuse to compromise on?
Fitness and exercise, and well everything matters. I feel every little detail helps in maintaining a healthy horse and competitive edge.
What goes through your mind in the alley before a run?
I try to remind myself to take deep breaths, relax my body, flex my horse to my leg each side to make sure their mind is connected to me. I usually pet there face and talk to them a bit.
What are your best tips for mental toughness and handling pressure?
I remind myself that all I have to do is go out and run around 3 barrels. I also find that the more time I give myself to be organized and prepared, the less stressed I am. I also try to remind myself to just be thankful I am able to barrel race and so I’ve already won no matter the outcome.
When you eventually look back on your rodeo career, what do you hope you remember most?
My amazing horses, the friendships I have made along the way, all the learning , and the support I have had to be successful.
What has been the best advice you’ve been given regarding rodeo and or barrel racing?
Look at the goals further down the road and not the ones right in front of you. It helps from putting too much pressure on yourself and your horses mentally in the pressure type moments.
Who has been in your corner the most this season, and what have they done to help you get here?
My son Kolt and his girlfriend, Gabrielle for always looking after things at home so I can be away. My veterinarians, farriers, and travelling partners. The Canadian Sports Med team, entering help, and my horse therapists. My friend and mentor, Teri George for always being a phone call away to talk me through almost every decision.
